As National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW) rolls around once again, it’s a perfect time to shine a spotlight on the amazing accomplishments within the trucking industry and by our drivers over the past year! Truck drivers are the backbone of our economy, ensuring that goods reach us on time and our stores stay stocked. So, let’s dive into some of the standout achievements in trucking from the last year and celebrate our highway heroes!
Advancements in Technology
The trucking industry has seen incredible technological advancements recently. One of the most exciting developments is the increased use of autonomous driving technology. While fully self-driving trucks are still a work in progress, there have been significant strides in making trucks safer and more efficient. Features like adaptive cruise control, lane-assist, and automated braking systems have become more common, helping drivers stay safer on the road and reducing accidents. Around 11.2 billion tons of freight was transported in 2023 during this technological movement, that’s cause for celebration!
Environmental Initiatives
The trucking industry is making strides each year towards sustainability. More companies are investing in electric and hybrid trucks – these eco-friendly options aim to reduce the carbon footprint of trucking! While electric trucks are still relatively new, they’re becoming more common, and their performance is improving rapidly. Over the last three decades, environmentally harmful emissions have been reduced by 98% in new trucks! This is a significant step towards making transportation greener!
Driving Toward Change
Driver support and safety have always been priorities, and this year has seen some fantastic improvements! Many companies have invested in better training programs and mental health resources for drivers. Recognizing the long hours and stress that comes with the job, trucking companies are offering more support through wellness programs and improved support from managers. This helps drivers stay healthy and motivated while on the road!
Not only are companies doing their part to help drivers, but many trucking companies and drivers are giving back to their communities in meaningful ways! Over the past year, we’ve seen numerous charity drives and community outreach programs organized by truckers and trucking carriers. Truckers Against Trafficking, a nationwide group of professional drivers committed to the cause of halting human trafficking, trained over 200,000 new members in 2023! These everyday heroes are dedicated to speaking up and helping others – a prime example of why truck drivers deserve to be recognized! From food drives to supporting veterans and schools, the industry has made a positive impact far beyond just delivering goods.
