The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is checking the compliance of commercial vehicles and their drivers. This year’s International Roadcheck will take place from June 5 to June 7 across continental North America. Here’s what you need to know:
The CVSA’s focus this year is on hours-of-service compliance. This means that inspectors in every jurisdiction will be looking at each driver’s logs to enforce the current hours-of-service laws. There are different rules that apply to different types of drivers:

Property-Carrying Drivers

• Maximum driving limit: 11 hours
• No driving after 14 hours on duty
• Must have previous 7 days when a log is required
• Must have 30-minute rest break after 8 hours on duty
• Cannot drive after 60 hours of being on duty for 7 days or 70 hours for 8 days

Passenger-Carrying Drivers

• Maximum driving limit: 10 hours
• No driving after 15 hours on duty
• Must have previous 7 days when a log is required
• No rest break required
• Cannot drive after 60 hours of being on duty for 7 days or 70 hours for 8 days

Logging Compliance: ELD, AOBRD, or Paper

All drivers need to know if they use an electronic logging device (ELD) or an automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD). Drivers must also be able to demonstrate an understanding of their logging device and be able to show the device to the inspector. Inspectors will ask drivers if they know how to use their logging device because there are so many models in existence and the inspectors may not know them all.
ELD operators will need their user manual as well as instruction sheet to show the inspector. Drivers will need to demonstrate that they know how to operate the ELD, as well as retrieve documents if the ELD stops working.
Any driver who still uses paper logs will need to show that their log is up-to-date, neat, and orderly. Update yourself on the exemption requirements and limitations that allow paper logging if you operate under an exemption.
