Truck driving is a fun and rewarding career, but it can be stressful, too. Self-care is best defined as identifying your needs and meeting them, whatever that means for you. There can be serious consequences if you don’t stop and take care of yourself. Apex CDL recommends these three tips to get started:
Eat the Right Food
It can be hard to get the right nutrients when you drive a commercial vehicle. Fast food fulfills a quick need and will fill you up, but not for very long. Lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, and fiber all balance your diet and keep your tank full! Eating right is a simple way to practice self-care while also keeping yourself healthy.
Get Enough Sleep
We talked earlier this year about the importance of only driving when you’re awake and alert. There are deadlines to meet and places to be when you’re a commercial truck driver. However, it’s also important to make sure you’re well-rested and able to perform your duties safely.
Exercise Your Body and Mind
Obviously, you can’t fit a treadmill or weight bench into your sleeper. There are other ways to stay fit and active during the day without needing a gym. Keep your body going with the basics: push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and toe-touches. And remember that your mind is a muscle that needs exercise! Long hours by yourself in a truck can cause mental strain and lead to loneliness and depression. Listening to an audiobook or subscribing to podcasts you enjoy can keep your mind sharp and alleviate boredom.
